Rattling from roof is driving me insane. Any suggestions on how to fix?

I'm hearing a rattle sound from the back part of the roof. It's really annoying...

I've been reading various other "popular" places for rattling, but nothing in the roof. Have anyone ever had this problem, and know what may cause this?

I'm not sure exactly where the sound is coming (hard to locate while driving...), but it's most likely in the area nearest the hatch - but NOT the hatch itself (if it's the hatch it must be the very upper part).

How hard is it to remove the roof cover?

Are you sure it's the roof? It may be your rear speaker brackets. Most tibs have this problem (especially in cold weather) and you just have to take your rear panels off and put some foam tape between the speaker brackets and the metal of the car. It may sound like its comming from the roof because of the acoustics of the car, but I'm willing to bet thats your culprit.

HOWEVER... I did have a rattle comming from my headliner close to the sunroof edge of the front. I sprayed tiny dabs of expansion foam from the outside (sunroof open) and it fixed that problem for good. Hope this helps.

I have a rattle in the 'roof area' of my car as well.. Though it only happens when there's a lot of bass in my music. I've discovered its the little console thingie in front of my sunroof (which I discovered after purchasing my car that the sunroof is not factory) that I assume is for sunglasses. I haven't done anything with it yet because I'm not sure how to fix the rattle without rendering that little console thingie useless/non functional. =(

Im quality control for hyundai. I test drive all the sonotas and the santa fe's. Im willing to bet you that its your sun roof air deflector. With the sun roof closed and driving down the road ( keep eye on the road) when you hear the rattle take your right hand and slide it to the back of your sunroof between your headliner and the actual sun roof. You should feal a bar like thing that goes all the way acost the sunroof. If you touch that and it stop then its your sunroof deflector. I write these up all the time at hyundai. You can also take your hand and hit the sun roof and listen for the same rattle. Other options include you climbing in to the back seat and taking your hand and bumping the head liner and seeing if there is a busted clips , or a clip not seated. This makes awfull racket trust me, I write up I dont know how many a night at work.

My interior rattles like a mofo. Not loud or really noticeable to others, but of course me driving the thing everyday I hear everything. I have learned to just live with it till the wheels fall off.

How to remove the headliner:

remove visors---on the mount, pop off the cover with a screwdriver, then remove 3 screws, then remove the one screw from the mount towards the inside (near sunglass holder) repeat on other side.

remove sunglass holder--take a small flathead screwdriver, pop out both dome light lense covers, remove one screw from inside each one. then pop the sunglass compartment down and remove two screws from inside there. Fiddle with it till it comes out (clips onto the headliner) then remove the wiring harness.

remove a-pillars--pull gently but firmly, starting towards the rear of the window and working your way towards the windshield.

Remove the part of the interior on the top of the back---comes off same as a-pillar--pull gently but firmly

remove two plastic screws from the back under the interior piece, these hold the headliner in place.

gently slide the headliner out of both sides of the rear interior toward the windshield until it comes out, beware though, the wire for the dome light is glued to the inside of it and there is no disconnect harness.

WHAT MAY BE RATTLING:

If it is towards the rear, try the foam around the interior panel, if not, check to make sure your pillars are tight, the piece that goes across the back of the roof is tight, and all screws are tight. Also check that wire for the dome light, it may be possibly floating around in there.

Update: I'm certain that it's somewhere in the roof - not speakers etc. And i don't even have a sun roof. Pressing my hand on the roof does not make it stop (limited how far i can reach while driving though).

But the noise has suddenly almost disappeared now... Sometimes i can hear it a little, and sometimes it's completely gone... I think after it started disappearing after I changed from winter tires to summer low profile tires - which is really weird since the car shakes itself shakes now :p

But i can also hear rattling sounds a lot fo places in the car... But it seems to come and go, so it's not a big problem.

I had a small rattle at certain speeds or with a lot of bass and it turned out to be the lens cover for the interior lights. The molded clips on the right side are not big enough and the lens moves about 1/8 inch. The only way I found to stop it is to pop half the lens out. It looks weird sticking down about 1/4 inch but the rattle is gone. I still have the usual sunroof rattle but I just solve that by sliding the interior roof cover closed.

I have an annoying rattle that i finally traced to my visor. the clip closest to the sunglass holder that the visor snaps into is loose. i have tightened it as tight as it will go, but the only way to make it stop is push your finger against it and hold.this makes shifting hard and looks silly, so i just crank up the stereo
