30,000 miles, v6, auto, with RIPP supercharger kit.

I do not care really about the supercharger kit. I am not an enthusiast, just an average buyer who really likes the look of tiburons. The extra horsepower is nice but I don't want any complex issues with the car because I know nothing about cars. I have to take it to a mechanic and get *** raped everytime.

The main reason I am interested in this car is because the miles are so low. Should I be interested in this tiburon? Is it possible to take out the supercharger so that it's back to stock and more reliable?

Ebay description:
"2005 Hyundai Tiburon GT auto 4spd. With RIPP Supercharger kit, DC headers, Apexi Super Airflow converter, and Greddy Exhaust. Car has low mileage just over 30k, Air Conditioning. Cruise, Power Windows, Moon Roof. 6 Disc AM FM Stereo Cassette. Car sounds and runs good. Nice power. Clean inside and out. Plenty of get up and go, and still gets 21-22mpg. Great summer driver car. Originally dynoed at 270hp. Car has a few small scratches and a very small door ding behind the passenger door, hard to see. Super low miles for a six year old car. "

I recently read on this forum that RIPP supercharger have been known to

"The RIPP system almost always ends in a failure of a stock motor, and when installed on a forged motor, is so hard to tune, that it's just a pain in the azz to own... there are a few that run them, but most of the time they will not admit how much work they are compared to the fun they might put out.. I always tell people to pass on them..." - UnHolyTib

"there have only been a few members on here who got the kit to run properly but it takes alot of tuning to get it right grasshopper comes to mind... he was putting down 300-350 after all was said and done and the car runs good but after alot $$$, if this is to be your wifes ride i would pass for something more reliable." - nolfol

"the ripp supercharger is known for blowing up engines and being hard to tune...ive only heard of one being operational from a kid here in mo who's late father tuned....oh course that kid had a razzi kit aswell" - bloodycliff

I personally wouldnt buy an already boosted tib because there is more risk something hasnt been maintained right and will break much sooner. Also, as you have found in the RIPP forum, the RIPP supercharger has been known to be a pain in the *** to tune properly so even more chance something could go wrong down the line.

If i were you, especially since you would be planning on removing the supercharger afterwards, i would look elsewhere. The low mileage would be really nice but all of that could easily be cancelled out by damage the supercharger might have done.

As for removing the supercharger after pruchase, yes it can definitely be done, you may need to find a stock airbox and some random pieces to take it back to stock, but definitely do-able.

NEVER buy anything with a ripp supercharged kit....they are hard to maintain and chances are there is damage in the engine bay because of it....unless you are a god at tuning.....and know the car....you should never buy a ripp superchager

With such low mileage I am having an issue just looking the other way.

With low miles KBB puts its at 9-10k private. I hope to nap it for 7-7.5k.

What tests could be performed to see if the supercharger had caused damage? where would I take it? How much would said tests cost?

What questions could I ask him to get an idea if it was taken care of, and tuned properly?

If you're not wanting to be maintaining it and tuning it all the time yourself, get an N/A Tib. If you want a tib for everyday driving and have little interest in racing and tuning, you will definitely regret buying a used supercharged Tib.

If you plan on removing the supercharger but don't have any mechanical experience with cars you'll probably have to spend $ on labor for someone to do the work. Additionally you'll also have to consider the cost of buying the stock airbox and whatever other parts you may need. That cost of all that could negate whatever deal you may get. Granted you might be able to sell the SC and recoup that money, but it sounds like a lot to go through just to be left with a low mileage car with a questionable engine.

Personally, I would look for another Tib.

1. Have a FI mechanic look at it.

2. Assuming its good... buy it and sell the RIPP SC and buy a decent alpine or equivalent.

3. it probably has 30K miles because there is a pond of oil in the plug, shotgun marks on the pistons or no pressure being produced...

but hey... Ive been wrong before!

Forget buying a Tib (or any car) off Ebay that has been supercharged. There is no telling if the owner even knew what they were doing with the car. Also ask yourself, why would the owner sell the car with that low of miles. I mean after all 30,000 miles on a 2005 is extremely low. Your best bet is to look the other way. I would recommend looking on craigslist. I found my car off there (locally) and test drove it. Have had it a few days and love it completely :D Just be patient and keep searching. You will find one for a food price.

Do not get it...the kit is famous for blowing engines.....i can almost garentee that something will go wrong

Yup 30K on a 2005! kinda screams "suspicious".

Could mean alot of downtime for the car in the past... and with a RIPP, I wonder why! lol. Do you have proof the car even runs?

Keep looking for an N/A tib, dude. And buying a whole car off of ebay is kinda... how is a nice way to put this... not right. You never know what you're getting. This supercharger sounds fishy, everything about it sounds fishy.

Buy the tib G-$ is selling. I know that one is a good machine.

I would keep looking expecially if your not even interested in the supercharger. Plus I agree totally with cliff about the ripp supercharger. I personally wouldnt buy a supercharged or anythign with major work done to it off ebay. Only off someone i know or if other ppl i know could vouch for it. Depending on your budget there is alot of nice 05-06 stock and then you can put your own touuches to it like ihe for that little extra power you want.

Thanks everyone!!! I even lowered the price today to 10k. Im basically needing enough to pay the loan off and enough to help with my school shortfall and things at home. Im hoping to get Voodoo sold to someone on NT because I would sure love to see how it progresses and especially since Im going to miss it :(
