Waiting in the shop for a set of fronts and a head unit (Infinity Reference 6012 and an Alpine CDE9852) to be installed, I saw the huge, hulking boxes and ugly, dangerously hot amps and wonder...does anyone need that much bass? I honestly think not.

At most, a small sub with a built in amp is more than enough, better than having your cargo space compromised with huge 15's? My question is, if i was to take the route of having the 6x9's put in back (and to be honest I bought a set of kenwood rears that sound pretty darn good for ovals) and later down the road put in a small sub, would that really be that bad?

I LOVE BASS!!
yeah, id look at a 8 or a 10. nice bass, nothin loud but it sounds good. as im guessin that what you want. even a nice self powered sub(amp and sub together) and yeah. i have that huge box. takes up almost the whole trunk. then i got 2 other 12's in smaller individual boxes when i need to use the trunk. now how often do i have it at its max. hardly ever. its loud enough to blow my ear drums to the point they bleed. i have it at -4, with gain all the way down. and i have some nice bass. not to loud. but enough to bump as we say. if you got questions, i can get most, if not, i can find out. as far as vehicle specific. im still new to the tib. so i can do my best.
adios

nothing is necessary except food, shelter and clothing. the problem with a small sub (for accurately replicated the music as it was intended) is that the majority of small subs can not play low enough to play the entire subwoofer frequency spectrum. on the flip side, having large quantities of large subs can be overbearing. basically it comes down to the eye of the beholder. if what you have is enough for YOU, then stick with it.

Okay, you have convinced me...and i think that sub/amp all in one thing is my best choice. But to feel complete, I need those rears, plus I already bought them.

A sub is necessary if you want to cover the a full frequency range accurately. SPL is stupid, I agree. Nobody anywhere needs a 15s for anything but being annoying. :p

I think I'm going to create a new sound competition. My car will be running 3000 watts rms, all to tweeters. I'm just going to have a trunk full of tweeters, all over the place. You can't mess with that. Oh, and it will sound good too.

Well, it all comes down to taste.

I don't like booming, overbearing bass. Sounds like you don't either.

1 amp and a 10" sub in a good box would probably be fine for you. Or check out the BassLink. I love mine. So simple, so small, and fairly light- plus it really rounds out the lower frequencies.

^^^+1 i find many people are liking these. ive yet to use one. but its really seems like this is the way.

actually 15"s are used quite a bit in sound quality competitions. I have one in my trunk and it doesnt get loud at all. Its all in how you use them.

3000RMS is enough to happily power exactly 120 tweeters at 4ohms if the 3000rms is also at 4 ohms. thats just as rediculous as SPL lol :p

i don't like complicated. ohms and numbers and math UGH i just want to enjoy the music...not science it to death!

thats why i really don't do any of the work...i mean i love being hands on, but if i don't understand it, i'll let a pro take care of it.

i love my subs... theres no comparison between all new speakers (i replaced all my speakers with some alpine type-r).. and i have subs also.. when ya turn off the sub it just feels like something is missing... frankly i love my speaker set up.. and the subs just enhance it all.. id get subs.. they dont have to be huge or super expensive...

i say go with a nice 12'' in a single sealed box. kicker CVRs are great in small boxes. it will give you a nice kickdrum sound on rock tunes and plenty of low-end bass for hip-hop stuff if youre into that too. i used to have 2/12'' in the hatch and it was just too much bass and too much weight.

the thing with the 6x9's is that youre not really going to hear them unless you spend time in the back seat. and even then, youre basically covering at least one of them if youre sitting back there. but like others said, its all about your taste and what youre looking to accomplish. if youre gonna do spl/sq competition then you better have some serious 15''s, but if your just want to listen to your tunes in comfort, id say a single 10 or 12 powered by a class D amp will get you the kind of good sound replication you want for most popular music.
the prolem im having now is that i have to turn up the tunes too high in order to drown out the headers, LOL.

Well, unfortunately music itself relies a good deal on math itself. (Not that it's directly related to the math involved in car audio)

I'm sure that there are 15"s out there that can reproduce a good sounding bass tone, but I'd be really afraid of it being able to keep up with faster moving bass lines.

And yeah, consider that my answer to obnoxious levels of bass.

This is where extensive research and really understanding T/S parameters comes into play.
