I go to the dealership today to get my oil changed and the wheels aligned because I just put new rims on my new Tib. They do the oil change, and when it comes to the alignment, the service tech comes up to me and tells me that my rear wheels need to me switched because when I put them on I faced them with the treads backwards. So I'm like, ok... go for it. Well then he tells me that it will cost me $45 just to take the wheels off and swap them. I was like, excuse me? How much?! Apparently they want to charge me all this because they have to take them off by hand. I told them goodbye right then because that is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard from them. I called up my buddy who is a mechanic at Lexus down the road, told him what happened, and he said that he'll do my alignment for less than the $109 that Hyundai wanted me to pay. ******* bastards.

Hyundai delerships in Quebec are notoriously bad at giving alignments. We've been told by clubhyundaiquebec to go to independent shops, especially if we have aftermarket wheels and high performance tyres.

and u find out that hyundai dealers are rip off artists now?......., everyone knows that the hyundai dealers are a bunch of bastards, they wanted to charge me $80 for an oil change, heres some advise never get any work done at a ANY hyundai dealer. Didnt mean to sound so harsh, its just that i feel so hateful towards my cheap dealers too. And im pretty sure im talking for most of the members on this forum.

They've done a pretty good job in terms of service in the past though, I don't mind at all taking my car there. They charge me $20 for an oil change which I think is pretty fair. But as far as this goes, it's pretty much bull****. There is no way anyone is his right mind would pay $45 to swap wheels.

all you guys expect techs to work for free...how the hell are they going to make money. its your fault the wheels were on wrong...you can choose not to have them swapped, but i dont see why you call them ripp off artiist... i take it you dont understand how techs get payed...they are not there to do stuff for free...

I pay 25 for an oil change at my hyundai dealer. The only place cheaper is Wal-Mart or Jiffy Lube, neither of which would touch my car even if it was to give me a free tank of gas. Occasionally, we get coupons in the mail for the independent mechanic chain in STL my parents go to for $20 oil changes and I go to them, otherwise, I go to the dealer. Your dealer just sucks. Hell, most dealers suck. Not just Hyundai ones. My parents could write a book of horror stories from a Pontiac dealer they bought a car from 10 years ago. Good dealers for any car are few and far between, but if you're lucky like me, you'll eventually find one.

They get paid by the hour and I know damn well they don't get paid $180 an hour.(being generous and saying it takes 15 minutes) If they are I am in the wrong f*cking business.

Its no different than retail. I work at Target and get paid by the hour. Doesn't mean I can give away merchandice for free or a discounted price.

Not saying give it away just cmon $45 for 5 minutes worth of work. Take the tires off and swap sides it's not hard. They are probably charging him the full tire rotation fee for only 2 wheels. It's alot higher than it should be just to swap the wheels from one side to the other.

On a side note how do you put 2 directional tread tires on correctly and 2 on wrong?!?!?

looks like i was right. you dont know how techs get payed...techs dont get payed by the hour...most techs are flat rate...it not going to fight over this. im just saying techs have to make a living as well...most of the charge is the dealer, not the tech...

look up how flat rate works...i have worked for days on crappy problems and only got payed a few hours...

read this.... yeah i know its long, but i hope it will let you know how techs get payed. im a tech, and i am honest and fair to the cust. which is prob. why i dont make a lot of $$. heres the link...

tech flat rate...

I'm a tech and work for flate rate.

When I was at the Dodge dealer this is how it went.

If you bring your car in for a 4 wheel brake job the book said it paid 4.5 hours. Now, if it takes me 20 minutes I still get paid for 4.5 hours. If it takes me 7 hours I still only get paid for 4.5 hours.

So chances are that when they said they would switch your tires for $45 they put it in the system as a tire rotation. That tire rotation time probably came up as nsomewhere between .3 & .5 of an hour, so that's the price they gave you. Whether it takes the tech 5 minutes or 2 hours to do it you still only pay the one price.

The whole flat rate system is a double edged sword. It can be great when it's busy but it can kill you when it's slow, because if there's no work then you're just hanging at work for free. On the flipside, if you're fast you have the ability to accrue more than 40 hours of pay while only working a 40 hour week.

which dealership do you go to? i usually only go to the dealer for stuff that needs to be fixed under warrenty
I used to go to Power Hyundai, that's where I bought my first car. The tech manager that was taking care of me there got a job somewhere else and I started going to the Hyundai on Bell Road Auto Mall. They've been pretty good about everything with my old car and I figured they'd treat me the same with this one. I don't care how much you get paid, flatrate or by the hour, charging $45 for swapping wheels is insane. Yeah, they've gotta make money, but it was a busy day and I don't think lack of work was the issue for them. Yes, it was my fault for having put the wheels on backwards in the first place, but c'mon, it would take less than 5 minutes to swap them out using a lift.

I read that and I see where you are coming from with the flat rate. That really only applies to warranty repairs. After warranty repairs (such as tire rotation) are set by the shop. By that page you sent me it says that the shop will multiply the book time by 1.5 or more. Why??? So they can soak the consumer for more money. I know the mechanic himself has no say so in the prices. I am just saying that dealerships are nicknamed stealerships for a reason. Go to like Discount Tire and they would probably do it for next to nothing.

Technically it is flat rate but it is based on an hourly rate structure. They get paid for how many hours of work the complete. Not how many hours they spend doing it.

since you can do it in 5 min. and you have a big problem with the price.
why dont you buy a lift, a compressor, some tools and do it yourself. that way you dont have to pay 45 for someone else to do it. :3_frusty:
Really? Why have I not thought of that? Maybe that is the exact reason I told them to go to hell and did it myself at home. Also, why would I need a lift and a compressor when all I need is a jack and a stand? Don't talk. :3_frusty:

Was it as simple as just taking the rims off and swapping sides, or did it involve actually dismounting and remounting the tires? We charge .3 hours per tire when we change tires at my dealership. That includes mounting/balancing. So, you figure if they had to take the tire off the rim, it would be .6x$85 (we charge $85 an hour for labor). That works out to $51, which sounds about right.

I get my tires rotated at Kauffman Tire for free since I bought them there... for the life of the tire... Oil changes I get done at Wal*Mart with me looking over their shoulder.... price is better than I can do it for myself. Just have to be sure you keep and eye on those folks...

I bought a floor jack, jackstands and so on so I do a lot at home. Those little compressors are cheap... beats half a buck at the QT,,,, guess I have a cheap streak..

The only time I let the dealer get into my car is if something breaks under warranty.. and I like those folks.

It was just as simple as taking both wheels off and swapping them. No taking off the tires required. What my friend told me later is they don't even have to take the wheels off to do the alignment. They could have aligned them with the tires on the wrong sides and then I could have swapped them at home. I'm not sure how true this is, but I'll take his word for it.

your frist post says they told you the tires were on wrong, and they will swap them if you want. they didnt say anything about not being able to align the car. i think you misunderstood them...

and yes you can do a alignment with the tires facing the wrong way...
No, he actually said to me that they have to swap the wheels in order to do the alignment. In which case he didn't know what the hell he was doing AND offered to rip me off.
