Welcome to NT!

First get the CarFax and make sure it's clean, then I'd suggest taking it to a professional mechanic to inspect it, unless you know your way around cars.

to be honest, a carfax really doesnt mean anything. if you want to avoid getting anything on the carfax its easy but its usually a sign of a poorly repaired car, while if its on a carfax and its been in an accident its probably fixed properly. for example i have damage to my right quarter panel that is not on the carfax and whoever did the repair job did a horrible chop shop job on it (it was before i owned the car) but my driver door and lock pillar were in a serious accident which is on my carfax, but you would never know looking at the car, because it was repaired properly and is perfectly safe.

I would just look for any obvious signs of prior accidents, just having an accident doesnt really mean anything though, its all about the quality of the repairs done, if you can notice the car was in an accident and your not trained to notice it, then it wasnt repaired properly and you should look elsewhere.

other than that ... look for rust, get under the car, check the rails, the inner quarter panels, check everywhere you can see. if in doubt, find another car or have a mechanic look at it if you dont do work on your own cars.
