Hey everyone,

My 2006 Tiburon has been sitting for around 9 months (went to college couldn't take it with me). It was running before I left but it wont stay running now. My first thought was the battery was sitting for a while so its probably dead. They did confirm that the battery was dead and I just replaced the battery today but it still will not stay runing. When I turn the key the car fires and the rpm goes up to 3 but then slowly falls back down to one and then shuts off. I am just starting to get into cars and have no clue what is wrong. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

If you give it gas, can you keep it running? If so, the IAC is likely stuck and won't hold idle. It can be removed and cleaned, there are a couple threads here that explains it.

Also may want to pick up a can of mass air flow cleaner and give it a few quick sprays. Could of collected dust/grime on the little prongs.

It will not stay running if i give it gas. It does stay running for a little longer than if i just turn the key but it still dies.
OK, good info.

When it is running, does it run OK or is it rough?

Any CEL's? If so, what are the codes?

Maybe try running it with the MAF unplugged, if it runs better, could be a bad MAF, or maybe just dirty.

I thought he could not get it to run? Starts, will rev and die

This is correct sorry if i am wording things weird. I turn the key the rpms jump to 3 and then slowly goes down to one and dies on its own. The check engine light is on but the car wont run so i have no way of finding out what code it is. The guy I bought it off of said it was just an o2 sensor i believe.

I understand it won't stay running even if you give it gas although it will run a bit longer.

Unplugging the MAF forces the ECU to ignore the MAF. If it runs better, than it's a MAF issue, if it runs the same or worse, plug the MAF back in.

A bad O2 sensor should not make it run the way you're describing.

If the MAF seems OK, check the corrugated elbow in the intake between the MAF and the throttle body, check it carefully for holes as this would make it run lean.

Hey Charlie-III your idea with the MAF was the winner. I did clean the IAC and the throttle body but it didn't do anything to help it so i went and unplugged the MAF and now it stays running. So now I should just replace the MAF correct?

I would try cleaning it with MAF cleaner first, but that pretty much proves that the MAF has some sort of issue.

it would also be a good idea to get those engine codes looked at too. if it does have an o2 sensor problem along with a MAF problem, I would say the engine is running like someone running on a treadmill while blindfolded.

Hahaha xD i will try to get them looked at before i go and get a new sensor. Thanks for all of the help! I really appreciate it!!
