MAZE’s Tiburon - F/L2’d 2003 GS-R

Now that I feel I finally have something worth showing I am making a profile thread.
My name is Mark and I am 21. I’m currently living in Kitchener, Ontario where I am taking a mechanical engineering program that specializes in robotics and automation. I have owned my Tiburon since June 2010. It is a 2003 GS-R (a trim level available in Canada until mid-2003) V6 6-speed, with leather and the Infiniti sound system. At the time it had 171,000kms (106K miles) on it. The previous owner installed aftermarket rims, a double DIN touchscreen headunit, 1100W amplifier, 1.2 farad capacitor, and upgraded battery and alternator. He also was running a 15” subwoofer but had blown that and removed it. Other than this the car was bone stock.

Right away after getting the car I installed chrome fog light rings (one of the black ones was missing), a ‘metallic’ fuel door, chrome license plate frames (love these), new tires, and a 12” Infiniti subwoofer in a ported MDF box I custom designed and built and coated in RockerGuard. It’s not the prettiest thing you’ve even seen, but it’s durable, formed to the trunk, and minimum space consumption for the recommended volume).

Other things I have added during this time include: A subwoofer gain control knob, Alpine iPod cable for my HU, DC Sports headers with a high flow cat welded in.

On June 1st 2012 I hit a pole with my car. I was going a little quick, the pavement and my brakes were slick, and my ABS was disabled (waiting on a wheel speed sensor). Accidents happen, I take responsibility for it. I completely destroyed a headlight, ripped off my front bumper cover, broke my washer fluid reservoir and pump, destroyed my fog lights, bent my passenger side tie rod, blew my driver side front tire, blew my passenger airbag (also damaged my glove box latch), shifted my sub frame, crushed part of my bumper, and crushed the frame (headlight support, front portion of the upper apron, upper radiator support) on the front right corner of the car. WHAT A MESS!

For a month after this I quoted body shops to fix the car. I also test drove and quoted the 2013 Genesis Coupe 2.0T Premium in Tsubaka red. It was awesome. After much debating I decided to fix the car. BUT I was going to make it better. I always take breaking something as an opportunity to improve it. So after much research and part searching and sourcing I decided to do a F/L2 front end conversion. If I’m not mistaken I am the first in Canada, maybe 1 of only a couple in North America. To proceed with this I located a wrecked 2007 Tiburon is a London, Ontario junkyard. It had been rolled, but had no frame damage to the front end. I had them tower cut the frame and this gave me all the appropriate frame components for the F/L2 fenders, headlights, bumper, and hood. Only thing it was missing was the upper tie bar / radiator support. This put in motion the entire conversion. I called up Import Shark and got a Tomato A&P bumper, Siebon CF hood, OEM KDM headlights, and GT-Tech Type II sideskirts on order from them. They offered me a great price with combined shipping.

By the time I had all my parts I needed for the body shop to proceed it was now the start of August. I was originally told by the shop it would take about 3 weeks for my car. This turned into 2 months. I chose a Maaco body shop for their lower labour rate and this guy Chris who did all the quotes and ordering, and basically coordination of the shop was extremely thorough, helpful, and knowledgeable. A week before they started work on my car he quit. This made the manager step up and coordinate operation. This was unfortunate because he is a major a$$hat. If my car was being covered by insurance or was a car from the dealership up front the building my car would’ve been done in 3 weeks. I even checked on my car every 2-3 days and always stressed I wanted it as soon as possible.
So finally on September 26th I received my car back. I still have lots of work to do on it. I have already wired the F/L2 headlights, installed the F/L2 tail lights, installed and calibrated my BROS gauges, and installed my Injen SRI. I made the mistake of buying one for the 03-04 Tiburon. With a little modification it will fit in behind the headlight.

Things yet to do:
Fully secure GT Tech sideskirts
Replace the dashboard
Replace the windshield
Finish installing my Zenesis ZN-502AS alarm & security system.
Get new tires, and possibly rims
New/upgraded brakes
Install wheel liners (something the body shop failed to do)
Have a proper alignment done. I have adjusted the tie rods to eliminate the ½” ‘tow-out’ the body shop left after replacing the inner tie rod. Currently sitting at 0 tow-in.
Give the interior the cleaning it desperately needs

Here is how the cars sits now… In its dirty, mismatched rim state.

Plenty more updates coming, and lots to fill in above.
Will have lots of pictures from the build coming.
But for now I wanted to share what I have and give myself something to build off of.

Will also be doing a write up on my F/L2 Front End Conversion

I'll admit it wasn't the cheapest, but it was still much cheaper than an 07-08 and I decided to fix and paint the car anyways so really it was just the extra couple hundred for the aftermarket bumper, an extra headlight and an extra fender.

I didn't want to mess around with fixing damaged metal so it was that much easier to do by me supplying a tower cut front clip from an 07 :3_nosthum

Nice. I can't say I've seen a GK converted to the FL2 front end and I've been here for a while!

Did they have to weld in any of the FL2 front supports? I would imagine so. I'm surprised your car wasn't totaled from that wreck.

In short, the car looks great. Way to stick it out and hopefully, they did a reliable job with a big conversion like this.

They sure did lol. A good portion of the front frame is from an 07.
I could've bought the parts direct from Hyundai, but each of the upper apron pieces are $600, then you need headlight supports, upper rad support, lower rad support, etc.
Got my front tower-cut clip for just over $200!

And thanks, it was a lot of work even on my end (not welding up the car myself).
Many have said it can't be done or shouldn't be done. Sometimes you just have to go the distance though for something truly unique!

Wow, what a comeback, cant wait to see whats next. Glad to see its turning out well after all that work. You should enjoy it more than the gen coupe if for no other reason than the custom work gone into it.

My shiney RIPP Vortech blower has been sitting around for a while now. Hopefully it is what's next!

I do really enjoy the Gen Coupes, but as everyone here knows they're becoming all too common, and don't have the passionate following like the Tiburon community.

I asked the same question when i firest started with the forum and got the same responce it wasnt worth doing..but you proved them wrong good sir..Nice work looks like a lot of well done work!!

Ahah thanks Gabe :3_bier:

Dayuuummm looking good!!! :D
Look forward to the fl2 front end conversion. I was told it was almost impossibly expensive to do. That front end is fantastic.
well damn! this is just both amazing and inspirational!
and these guys here told me that it couldnt be done.
way to prove them wrong!
Wow, great job man, the car looks mint.
Thank you all very much! :3_chubby:

Now what about every other "can't" be done topic touched?

#29 ·
It was between this and the EMU. No regrets choosing the Tomato! Thanks!

What a transformation! Great job, the car looks awesome.
Thank you!

looks good man not an easy conversion to pull off
It sure did take long enough and even on my end, the hours put into getting this done are ridiculous

#30 ·
First and foremost let me say congrats because the car really does look awesome.

Do you mind if I ask ballpark what all of this ran you?

There's lots of people saying that it has been called "impossibly expensive" and looking over all the stuff you picked up for this, I'm thinking that they're not exactly wrong.

Between the front end you bought, the hood, bumper, headlights, and all the labor in the shop, not to mention that you hopefully got things like the frame damage fixed ..

I haven't even really looked into it much myself, but I think it's around 6K
It could've been much cheaper if I just fixed the car. But then I added in a FULL paint job, the additional cost of the front AND rear conversions. Figured I want to keep the car for a while, so I may as well invest in it.

I will do a full tally of the cost when I do my F/L2 front conversion write-up.

Ho ok now I see why you were that busy haha!

That is ****ing nice Mark!!

I am jealous! Nice job. And I really do want to see this next summer at a big meet that we will organize!!
For sure man :3_bier: and it still is keeping me very busy! So much to do.... but I'm trying to balance it all.

Aww, man! I love the tomato, but I would have gone with the EMU!!! Pure sex!!! Lol
I was wanting to... but when it came down to it, it was more expensive and I've heard fitting an Icebox in there is nearly impossible. So with the planned upgrades for the future I had to go the option that allows me to install an intercooler.

Voting for COTM and POTM is up! I entered for both, but not saying go vote for me -> go check it out because there's lots of great cars to check out!

In case the car didn't look enough like an F/L2....

Picked up some '07 GT rims last night with Hankook Ventus tires @ 50% tread all for $200!
I think they have the pressure sensors in them too. Not that my 03 needs them...

Aha yeah. Better yet, TEIN coilovers are on their way! Thanks to slow2K2GT. Unfortunately they'll just be expensive paper weights until spring rolls around. I also need to get fender liners in being the shop that did the work lost them :3_frown:
