Hi guys i recently bought myself a 1.6 hyundai tiburon and im loving it right now but there seems to be one big issue with the car that i seemed to fail to see when i bought the car . the power steering belt and the pulley slow down when turning the wheel and completely stop when i fully lock either left or right . I thought it was the pump or the belt so i replaced both of them but now its just as bad and now i can even smell burning rubber (I am assuming that it is from the belt). can anybody help?

I don't have any experience with the 1.6L, but if it's anything like the 2.0L then the power steering belt runs off the water pump, which is ran off the crank. In short, if the water pump belt is slipping, so will the power steering pump.

Either way, likely have a belt tension issue, unless you have a completely clogged / kinked power steering return line.

thanks for the response man , this is my first car so im not really too mechanically knowledged . when i went to see if the new belt was loose or tight i was able to twist it around 90 degrees which i seen was normal online but i dont know why im smelling burning rubber

You said you replaced the pump, but have you fully flushed the hydraulics?
i got it replaced and when i noticed that the issue was still there so i seen that the power steering fluid was almost brown i flushed out the old fluid and disconected the tubing and turned the wheel to get as much of the old stuff out as normal then put in the new power steering fluid and moved the wheel again to get the fluid into the system and added more till it was at the max . it didnt seem to do anything though :(

Then if what The_Evenger said is true, it could be your water pump belt that also needs changing. Turning the wheels to full lock will put high demand on the power steering pump and make it really hard to turn, so if a belt is loose it'll start slipping, and will quickly result in burning smells.
If there's a leak in the hydraulic lines you could possibly be smelling power steering fluid getting sprayed onto the exhaust and burning. It's not really a rubbery smell, but eh.. you never know.

also my temps on the car are great so if it was the water pump belt then wouldnt the temp become hotter ?

I havent taken a good look at the water pump belt yet but if it was something to do with that then wouldnt that cause my engine temps to become too hot if its slipping ? , my temps seem to be fine. also when moving the car at low speeds and moving the wheel im hearing a sorta squeel . not sure which belt it is coming from but its probably from the power steering belt

A slightly slipping water pump belt usually won't raise engine temps much at light loads. Heavy acceleration or long uphills may show it.
So, loose water pump belt will lead to squeals and hard steering.

im gonna try and tighten the water pump belt tomorrow and let you know if it solves the issue :) . you are right about the uphill heavy acceleration though , when climbing this pretty steep hill i was at high rpm in 1st and 2nd and whenever i had to pause on the hill and then start again the squeal would happen for a few seconds then disapear for a while. Wish me luck🤞

hi Charlie so i couldnt find the water pump belt so i tightened the power steering belt and i tightened the alternator belt and still the same issue :( . Is there any way that i can upload a video of it so that it might give you a better idea ?

If your belt has been slipping bad enough to smoke, it's probably never going to grip properly again. It's time for a new belt.

And for what it's worth, this is the arrangement of pulleys we're expecting to see...

Another possible issue is a failing crank pulley. I believe yours has a composite pulley like the V6 (steel outer for belts, steel inner to crank and rubber in between. These can separate with age. They usually slip under load or fast acceleration when cold. Once slipped a few times the rubber grabs more.
There is no fix, just replacement.
You can make a chalk line across the face to the outer edge (engine off!) and check after a squeal event. See if the line is still good.
I now paint a line when I have the pulley off.
This an example of my Subaru pulley which is similar to a Hyundai pulley ....https://www.newtiburon.com/media/img-0491-crank-pulley.11996/

hey guys thanks so much for your replies and your help im really happy that others are so interested in helping fellow tiburon owners :) SO I FIXED IT !!!!! . in the end i got super frustrated and just tightened the alternator belt like ALOT and voila it works perfect now. I feel somewhat more knowledgeable with belts and power steering and you guys are to thank for that !! :D . now i just need to fix a couple of small issues (ABS light on and the fact that i cant rev past 4.5k rpm without the car jerking )
