Hello all! This DIY is to step by step walk you through removing the headliner in your car, and covering it in suede..... It got dark by the time I finished this so I will edit this in the morning with updated pictures, regardless, here you go!

Tools needed:

  • Phillips Head Screwdriver
    Flat Head Screwdriver
    Razor Blade
1 Cubic Yard of your choice fabric
Super77 Spray Adheasive (or strongest available)
Second set of hands (dedicated girlfriend)

Total time:

  • 1.5 Hours (ish)

First step, we need to remove all of the trim pieces to get the headliner out... We'll start with the sunglasses holder thing... there are four screws total in this thingy, Open it up and if you look into the thing, you'll see two screws:

Image

Next remove the overhead lighting cover, there are two indents in the plastic that you can slide a flathead into, it simply pops out one side at a time

Image

if you pull your lights out, or if you can see the top, there are two more screws, one in each light housing.. then simply pull and the whole thing should pretty much fall out:

Image

You'll have to unplug the wire thing that gives power to the lights...Now you have a gaping whole, and you're not turning back on me now....

Image

Moving on to the visors, there are two points with screws that need to be removed, here:

Image

and here: now this one is a bit trickier because you have to remove a platic cover that, to be honest, is kind of a PITA to pull off.... all you do is pull hard but not hard enough to crack it (like i did).

Image

then do the other side.... after you've removed both visors we'll start on the trim above the door. Simply slide a flathead into the trim and with a little levarge in specific points (four along the window into the dash)

Image

Image

alright, next we travel towards the back... there is a flat piece where i don't really know how to describe better than the picture:

done:

ok so there are two of these annoying little screw like things that i basically just broke off 'cuz fingers aren't supposed to loosen stuff like that... here's what they look like:

Image

and here's what i did to remove them:

Image

i broke one and ruled them both obsolete, the plastic surround trim pieces hold the headliner in just fine without those little guys, but if you can get them out and back in, go for it!

once you've removed those few trim pieces, you should be able to slide the headliner out without removing these:

Image

with a little help, slide the headliner forward towards the windshield, you'll want to move slowly and evenly, so this is where the seond set of hands comes in handy quite well.

Image

Image

Image

it's important to utilize your helpful hands, so don't squish them with the headliner like i did :)

Image

Image

ok, all finished, slide the headliner out careful not to drop it or bend it... next you'll want to find a large surface to lay the headliner down onto and begin work. i'd suggest covering the surrounding area with newspaper so not to spray any glue on anything but the headliner.

now, make sure your fabric fits hhah, you'll want a little fabric hanging over each side of the headliner.

Re: DIY Suede Headliner

i started at the front, closest to the windshield because it's the most difficult. to start spray a relatively thick coat of the glue, but not too much so that it leaves a puddle. i recommend spraying at a distance of six to eight inches. with your helpful hands holding the fabric vertically above each spot your applying with a bit of pressure, smoothly slide the fabric down with your hand...

Image

Image

regarding the creases in the center and the visors, you'll want to make sure the glue is bonding with the fabric as those areas are going to be more prone to falling later on....

wait around twenty minutes for the glue to dry fully and bond securely with the fabric.

next you'll want to cut any large amount of fabric hanging over the sides do this by flipping the headliner over...

Image

spray the edges of the other side of the liner so the folded fabric will stick to it....

all that's left is to cut out the sunglass holder and map lighting thing and poke holes through your fabric where the visors will be screwed in later...

slide everything back in, screw in all screws. den you donneeee.... here's what my finished product looks like:

good luck to all atempting! PM me if any questions arise!

Re: DIY Suede Headliner

i got it at Joanne Fabrics for like $26 a yard stevey.... and thanks everyone!! it really makes the car look better, not over the top like i was worried. a lot of the people i showed weren't sure what i was showing them because it looks like it belongs in the car...

whew - and I thought I was the only one that goes to JoAnn Fabrics....well, I go w/ my wife when she gets her sewing/craft/blanket materials. I'm kinda crafty so I look around to see what things I can make to sell back or something. Gonna check out the textile section next time I go - maybe reupholster the Tib too :)

Joanne's my biaa, finding this suede was like a dream.... it's the perfect color for what i'm going for in the car, it's not a very shiny or flashy silver, but it's not too white either.... i'd recommend this to anyone who is a tiny bit crafty and digs doing this kinda stuff....

Re: DIY Suede Headliner

seats r black with red stitching. but i think it would look kinda cool with black swede liner and tan vizors and tan trim all around

any opinions ??

oh can i get fabric at wal mart haha ? or Micheals?

Re: DIY Suede Headliner

nononononono.... tan + red + black is gross. and please do not get your fabric at WalFart.... michaels more than likely won't have the fabric but Joanne's will....... i'd probably do a red headliner, it'd pop out a lot, but definitely match the stiching and the black seats, and consider getting new visors that match the rest of the cars interior? good luck mane, shoot me a PM if you have any other questions regarding this DIY...

Re: DIY Suede Headliner

wal mart did not have swede :(

and neither did micheals
Why do you think he said to go to Joanne's?

Im gettin ready to do this but I dont know what color I should go with. My paint is black with red flake but sometimes it can look maroon, purple, ect. I also have interior pieces painted body color. My seats are black with red stitching. My engine will have some red powdercoated items. Im also doing the door panel inserts. So what do yall think?
Well, I'd say your options from what you've said would be black or red in order to match your car. If you're good at sewing, and/or have a machine, I'd go with black and add some red stitching somewhere on the headliner, maybe on the edges on two lines down the middle.
