just wondering if anyone has replaced lifters before and how to go about it and how much of the engine needs to come apart, i have not done it before but feel confident enough to give it a whirl.

any input would be great

You can follow the "2.7 timing belt" then "mild camshafts" DIY here. Basically, once your camshafts are removed, you can access your lifters, you just have to lift them by hand, oil the new lifters and place them.

It supposes to remove the timing belt, remove valve covers, remove camshafts. It can be scary if you've never done it, but on the tib it's not difficult; The DIYs are good and there are no necessary unusual tools.

Hydraulic lash adjusters or "The Annoying Ticking Thing" or whatever the name...

Yeah they are called hydraulic lash adjusters this isn't a pushrod engine. They work on oil pressure to keep your valves adjusted. To check the HLA if you can squeeze and compress it then it's bad.

ok so the hydraulic lash adjusters, are they hard to do or no?

Depends what you consider hard. The cams have to come out on top and that means you have to take off your timing belt but I think this is easy and defiantly doable with the engine in the car. Is there a reason why you want to replace them? They shouldn't need to be replaced unless there is a louder than normal ticking and you can usually pin point it on one side of the engine over the other.

yes i had a crank seal go and the lack of oil pressure made them loose and now they are making a loud noise, i was told by hyundai its a 1000 dollar job and then i asked why they didn't do it when they had the timing belt off and everything apart when they replaced my crank seal??

but now I'm just gonna do it myself, i agree timing belt is easy and as far as cams go i have no problem doing that but i guess my question is, are they easy to get at once cams are off?

They are super easy to get once the cams are off. Hold them with the tip or your fingers, lift, they'll come immediatly.

For 1000 dollars, i'll buy an airplane ticket from France and will come to do the job lol

Before you change them out based on a dealership mechanic's advice, what type of oil and weight are you using now? These is key to proper HLA function.

i believe dealer ran 5-30 which is what i usually put in it, 5-20 n the winter

They should pump back up, the way they work is off of oil pressure. Last time I took the heads off they were ticking for the first few minutes before they were pumped up all the way. Same thing happens if the car sits for a very long period. Can you make a video? I have tappets if you need some good ones I just removed them from my old heads. Also, before I spent $1000 to try and fix a engine I would probably just throw in a lower mileage engine from the junkyard for $300.

what are tappets? and the dealer said its because they are loose now because of low oil pressure for a while? idk what is actually going on in there but it ticks and if i can get some time to make a video this weekend i will

Tappets is just another word for HLAs. It is possible one may have went bad, but I dont think they all could would have just gone bad.

I would try going to 10W30 motor oil and hold the throttle at 2200-2500 rpms for at least 2 min and see if the noise subsides, which it should. if not then I would change the HLA's out. If the car sets for more than a couple of days the HLA's tend to bleed down. A leaking crank seal will not cause the lifters(lash adjusters) to bleed down unless you ran the motor really low on oil(like 3qts low) usually higher mileage motors tend to make more noise and bleed down easier:3_bier:

ill try the oil and hopefully get a video up here tomorrow

thank you

Ok I have a horrible tick after having a shop did a timing belt job - the timing marks were checked twice and it is believed the timing is where it should be.

My question is has anyone here actually replaced the lifters before? Surely someone is this entire website has paid to do it or tackled the job itself. Did replacing the lash adjusters do away with the horrible ticking noise? I want some feedback before I spend $1000 to have the job done.

Did they do an oil change at the same time? If so, what oil (weight) & filter?? Nothing they did should cause an issue with the HLA's while doing the timing belt.

Does the ticking go away after a drive? How many miles have you driven?

PS, for whatever reason, the mods WILL come in here and say, "Don't bump old threads (older than 2 months), start your own and link this one....". Then, they will likely lock this one....

Yea but the oil pump is turned by a cog, not a ribbed pulley, so it will always spin the same no matter what because otherwise the belt wouldn't be making proper contact.

Okay, not sure what caused it all of a sudden then. I could have understood if it was down for a week or something since all the oil would have drained from the HLAs.

I have the same problem, but in my 2004 Tiburon the noise gets really loud and even though I changed the oil just recently. Even if I let it sit and heat up the noise stays loud and doesn't die down I even if i drive it every time i press on the gas it gets louder and louder. it dies down after driving it a little bit. I want to fix it.
