Car won't go into gear

Some mornings when I start my car, it won't go into any gear, including reverse. It doesn't make any grinding noises or anything when I try to put it in first, it just refuses to go. I was on the verge of giving up, but I decided to try one more time and it went, no problem. It did it again yesterday and after the initial struggle, it was fine and shifted smoothly once I started driving. I stopped at a stop sign and it was once again difficult to get into first. I got my car inspected today and mentioned it to them. They said that they checked the fluids and everything looked okay

Has anyone else had a similar problem?
I'm sorry if this has already been discussed in another thread. Just direct me in the right direction please. Thank you! :)

Clutch may not be fully disengaging. Get dealer to check clutch travel. Or maybe it's just cold in NC!

Not sure if I have the same problem or not but, half of the time I go to put mine into reverse and it'll only go half-way into gear, like something soft/rubberish is blocking the last few mm of the shifter. I'll go from neutral back into reverse XX amount of times before it'll get into gear securely. It's always random and sometimes it'll go right into reverse the first time. When slowing down to stop with clutch in and shifting into first sometimes it's very rough/resistant putting it into first. It'll always go, but there's a bit of effort required just pushing the shifter into first. Other gears are smooth... I feel like this is some type of bushing but I'm lost too.

Hopefully we have the same problem, if not disregard me!

Same problems here. I think every Tib owner has trouble getting it in reverse (my previous Tib had this too). And I believe it's normal shifting into first gear is hard when you are not standing still to prevent damage.

But on this Tib shifting is hard most of the times. When I "force" it into gear it get worse, but when I hold down my clutch and push the lever to the right I feel something move and shifting is smooth again for a while.

I have replaced my shifter bushings and it's tighter now, but the problem still excists. I'm afraid I need a new clutch, but I want to be sure before I spend €600 and find out something else is wrong.

This started to finally happen to me, I have to jiggle it back and fourth like 20 times to get it going. Its been getting worse and worse and its not cold weather related.

It has been getting a little colder in the mornings. This only happens when I am at a stop, mainly when I first go to drive in the mornings. The shifting is less smooth than normal when I first start out, but it normally smooths out as I go. Well, other than the time when it didn't want to go back into first at a stop sign. It will not go into any gear though, not just first.

My car has a new clutch, so I'm hoping that it isn't to blame.

I had a similar issue...started with same as you, could not get it into gear but if I kept fiddling, it would go. Just got worse and worse so I thought it was my clutch or throw out bearing not fully disengaging the clutch as it started grinding gears when I forced it into gear a couple of times (in frustration trying to get it home). I contacted Will and ordered my new clutch through him, and after hearing the issue I was having he recommended I change the clutch fork as well. He explained to me that they do go and end up sometimes snapping or sometimes they just twist and its hard to tell till the car is put back together and you try to shift. So I purchased the fork from the dealer (I believe a dealer only part) and had it installed at the same time as my clutch and my issues are gone now... Maybe this could be the cause?

Not sure if they can check it before you purchase the part. I know I brought my car to Mr. Transmission and they told me they can look at it before they do anything to it, so maybe try that. I already knew that I was dropping a new clutch in it so when Will suggested I do the clutch fork at the same time to save labor I did it anyways. I think I paid 78$ Canadian for the fork? I know it was under 100$... At the same time however, it could also be the clutch cylinders that are messed up. They would be the easiest to check as you would just check the travel on them and they are easier to get at than the fork. Also check see if the clutch cylinders are leaking and check to make sure you still have fluid in your clutch cylinder reserve tank, if the tank is empty you may also need to bleed the clutch lines.

Shift into fourth and then go into first or reverse. Going in to 4th helps to line up the gears. Especially reverse which does not have syncros.

+1..... sometimes just leaving the shifter in neutral, letting off the clutch and then back down & shift helps. Letting off the clutch can spin the input shaft a bit.

As to the TOB/clutch fork, no real way to "check it" without opening the clutch area up. At that point, it would likely be better to just do a clutch replacement.

Glad it helped. :)
