I have been drinking up all the knowledge and info here on NT.com these past few days. I am loving everything I am seeing/reading. I am totally nervous though about purchasing a Tiburon.

I have to travel to El Paso to purchase a Tib. Most of the ones there have high mileage. I'm talking 165k and up. Is this normal? I'm assuming most of the owners here purchased a tib used.

What are your thoughts on high milage tibs? Should I avoid them? Should I stop being such a ***** about it and just get one? Lol.

Well, these days this car is +/- 10 years old, and intended to be a daily driver so expect high mileage. I actually have 188k miles on mine today, and looks and drives better than most cars you see today. Try your best to find a lower mileage example, and then take care of it properly. I can help you out with that. Or rather, we the forum community can help you lol. But I would do a search on everything you can think of, e.g. when to change fluids and with which type of fluid, and which parts are more prone to fail sooner than others. Search enough (and if you don't go crazy) you'll find everything you need.

When I made my recent search for an 07-08 Tib I looked far and wide for a low(er) mileage example that also was not a salvage title vehicle. Out of an extremely wide search area I only found one example; one that I was lucky to come across and just happened to be less than 25 miles away. Every other Tib I found for sale had well over 100k miles, and all but one was a salvage title vehicle.

To answer your question, they're out there, but they're very rare.

Would you think that it would be okay to purchase one that has a salvage title and high miles? I only have about 4K to spend on a car so that's what I am finding in my price range.

I have wanted a Tib for a long time, and I am willing to travel over 900 miles to find one that I like. I just don't want to end up with a POS.

I guess what I am wanting to know is what sort of problems Tib owners run into and how I can check for those problems before I buy one.

You should be able to find a high mileage Tib that does not have a salvage title in that price range. The problem with salvage titles is that you don't know exactly how much, or what, damage was done to the car, or how competent the person who performed the repairs is at fixing Tibs. It would suck to pay $4k for a car just to find out that it has a bent frame or similar high-dollar problems.

Also, depending on the state, it can be a PITA to register the car with a salvage title. Some states require an inspection (by the state.....) before you can register it, even if it was registered in another state AFTER the work was done.
You may want to check online with your state DMV (or whatever they call it).:wink2:

@Charlie-III is right in that you can have problems registering a salvage title vehicle. some states require an intensive inspection while others may not allow it registered at all. ohio is probably well out of your travel way but there are several lower mileage Tibs around me with around 25K to 80K going for approx. 6K to 10K. lower miles usually means much higher prices. good luck with your search, you'll find one.

I paid 9k for my tiburon. It's a 05 model 1 owner had 70k miles on it. Completely stock, 0 issues with the vehicle whatsoever!! Of course that was after it being financed so i paid a pretty penny on interest. You can also check out the tiburon facebook groups and ask if anybody near you has one for sale. You can check out Tuscani Underground and Hyundai tiburon owners. Tuscani underground is a wholelot more friendly though.

I'd base your choice off of the buyer or what changes have been made to the car. By this I mean you'll have much better luck with a stock Tib coming from an older owner than one that has a bunch of mods coming from a teenager. Likely the modded one has been beat on and may/may not be up to date on maintenance. I bought my i4 '04 for $2,000 with 130k miles, it only needed a new passenger steering knuckle and still runs like a dream now at almost 145k. One thing you want to ask sellers is when the timing belt was last changed, it should be done every 60k miles. These are interference engines so if the belt snaps it's new engine time, good to know if it's due to be replaced and if it was done recently that's a good selling point.

I'd also stay away from rebuilt titles, check engine lights or overdue inspections, you never know what's gonna pop up after you've made the purchase. Tiburons are great, fun cars though so if you find a keeper you'll love it!

Amazing info! I will check all those before my purchase.

Luckily I am native american and can tag my car using Tribal Tags. No problem with salvage titles. Thanks for the info though! I had no idea.
