May have over tightened valve cover bolts

I know they recommend 5-10ft/lbs. I was using one of those analog/breaker bar type torque wrenches and it wasn't reading out right I don't think, so I tightened them all till very snug then took them a bit more. If I was a betting man, I say they're at 15-20 ft lbs. Nothing snapped though. The gasket sealer is set, would you loosen them a bit or do you think if they would have snapped then they would have snapped already?

Normally when a bolt is over tightened (before snapping off) the diameter will shrink a little and the thread pitch will be modified. This reduces the strength of the bolt.

If you haven't damaged anything except the bolt, I recommend to change them completely and then reinstall them and tight them with the proper torque.

Agreed with above post re check the bolts.... but if you dont know how much they have been overtightened its hard to say, it could actually cause the cover to leak as it will warp it..or the bolts could snap and the threads could get pulled unevenly..I willing to bet you did not do much damage because it sounds like just a few pounds over what it should be.

I agree.

With the heat and the vibration, that bolt might become loose and will cause the cover to leak.

Replace it. It will cost a max of 5$ and everything will be fine.

They will probably be fine. I've changed VC gaskets on a V6 Tib several times and on quite a few I just used a socket wrench and eyeballed it. So long as its around the right torque, it'll be fine. If you want to be extra cautious, retorque them with a better torque wrench.

Yeah, valve cover bolts dont have super terribly important need to be at the right torque. When I did mine, i just eyeballed them. Never had an issue. But if you are indeed worried, as said, get a better torque wrench. Your main objective it to just make sure the valve cover gasket is sealed and not leaking anything in or out

I loosened them up a little - I tightened to about as much as you could would you using just your pinky on a 3/8" ratchet (just snug) plus another 1/4 turn. I'm guessing this should be in the ball park of 5-10ft lbs.

I just make them tight basically.

Also, I've snapped a valve cover bolt before from having the wrong specs.
