Steering Wheel Emblem Removal

So to start off I would like to say that this is another way to remove the steering wheel emblem. Another way is to take the steering wheel apart to remove it giving a clean look as seen in this DIY

http://www.newtiburon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19273

or by doing it this way. This way takes little mechanical know how and is for those people like me who have nightmares about taking stuff apart and attempting to put it back together again.

After doing this DIY you will NOT have the emblem anymore because it will be in pieces so if you want to keep the emblem so you can put it back on please use the other DIY.

Here are the tools you will need in order from the picture: A wire cutter, big pliers, needle nose pliers, and a Flathead screwdriver.
Image

REMOVE THE BATTERY- for those of you who do not know how to remove the battery here you go. lift up the hood and unscrew the bolt holding on the battery ring thing with pliers or a wrench. you will not get electrocuted I promise (but don't sue me if you do)
Image

pull off the ring thing and move it off to the side so that it is not touching the metal. you disconnect the battery so people don't get pissed hearing you car honk every few minutes from you hitting the horn while doing this.

OK, this DIY is pretty straight forward, but when I was about to do this, I wanted to see pics of people doing it just to make me feel better about doing it, but couldn't find em. So I did it anyway and took some pics for other people who feel the same way I do.

Start by pulling up one side of the H, left or right, it really doesn't matter. The wire cutters are your best friend because when you start to mangle the H with em, it gives a better surface for the needle nose pliers to hold on to...or just pull with the cutters like I did. start to pull the one side up as far as you can.
Image

Image

Cut that piece off but leave a little nub on the top on bottom part as little handles for the needle nose pliers to pull on later. You can either cut those now or wait till you pry up the other side. Pry up the other side the same way. You can use the flat head to get under and loosen stuff up, but be careful because it could slip and you could accidentally cut the material on the wheel. I got one cut, they are barely noticeable, but I recommend being careful with the flat head. here is the second side being pulled up. I did this one with the needle nose pliers.
Image

now cut this side as well with little nubs left to pull on as seen in this pic.
Image

now if you want, you can cut the top and bottom bridges. I cut them because I felt it would make things easier, but if you want to try to pull it off in one big piece, that's fine. Here I have cut the bottom one off. Use the wire cutter to cut each side, then it pops right off using the pliers. I didn't cut the top one off because it was already pulled up and I used it as a handle to grab on to.
Image

Now to get the actual H off you have to Pull Pull Pull. Start with the right or left side because there are two metal pieces that are holding the H onto the steering wheel that you have to cut. I started with the left side and puled until that metal piece was visible, then put the wire cutters under and clipped the metal piece. Here you can see the piece you have to cut. it is the metal thing going into the steering wheel.
Image

now you can cut away any excess that is in you way and start to pull on the right side until you can get to the metal piece holding that side in. Here is a pic of the peice on the right side.
Image

after cutting that the rest of the mangled H should just fall right off. Now you have a clean slate to work with. I personally got a midnight wolf stainless steel wheel emblem, but whatever suits your taste is fine. this was not difficult whatsoever and i recommend it over the sticker that goes over the H unless you want to keep the H.

Please feel free to make suggestions to add or subtract from this DIY, I can take constructive criticism. good rep is always appreciated if this helped you.

looks good

were there any peaces of metal that fell back into the wheel? if so do u hear a rattle or vibration from left over scraps?

those pieces of metal are attached to an oval shaped piece of metal ( or so I think by looking at the pics of the other DIY. ) so I don't think that the oval metal piece would move since its bolted down causing the metal peices that held down the H to stay still. Honestly I haven't driven it yet, so I don't know, but my guesses are that it won't because I didn't see any spare pieces of metal fall abck into the steering wheel.

ok well if there is a rattle of loose metal after you drive it a bit let it be known because that was the only thing keeping me from doing this mod earlier.

Ya, I will let you know...i'll go out right now and move the steering wheel around to see if it rattles, and i'll listen when I drive it. I never thought about that problem before hand, lol. BTW do you know if it's normal when your car turns on that the air bag light blinks 3 times then turns off? that's what happened when I turned my car on and i'm just checkin to see if it's normal

EDIT: just went out, turned on the car, and did all steering motions with no rattle at all. After i install the midnight wolf emblem and take a drive, I will post an update and let you know

Re: DIY Steering wheel emblem removal

not to cut down the DIY, but there's already another DIY on how to remove the front portion of the steering wheel (airbag and cover), and then remove the entire H and the two rivets holding it in from behind.

Thats what I said in the first paragraph of this DIY...I even put a link to it....this is for if you dont want to take apart your steering wheel. other people do it this way, but no1 has put up a DIY with pics of it yet

to contribute, I did this as well and all was fine for about a month after doing it originally.... then I heard some rattling one day when turning... thought nothing of it, but it slowly became more frequent. I just followed the other DIY and removed the two rivets and life was once again good.

Thanks for answering the rattling question

I hope mine wont do that. When I cut mine I kinda left a little bit pokin out so it would fall back in or go under the steering wheel. I hope that will solve the rattling problem. All in all I think this is worth it just because its simple, and if it does start to rattle, you can take your wheel apart, but its worth a try.

Re: DIY Steering wheel emblem removal

^^you mean just grind it down?

BTW how does this get to the DIY section? I tried to make the thread there but I guess it has to be moved by a MOD

Re: DIY Steering wheel emblem removal

That is dumb. Two torx screws remove the cover, unclip the airbag, and snip the two rivets. It is as simple as that. No drilling. No mangling flying H's.
If you have an 05+ Tib it isn't as easy as that. Once you take the two torx screws out and remove the cover you pretty much can't do any more. Everything inside isn't just 'clipped' down. There's (if I remember correctly) about 8 or so rivets holding everything together before you get to the two rivets holding the H on. I ended up just pulling the H off like in this DIY. It's been well over a month now and there's no rattling or anything.

Re: DIY Steering wheel emblem removal

I didn't know that fl+ was different. I would be interested to see a photo. When I did it, it leterslly took me 2 minutes and I was able to set a stack of books on it to make sure the superglue stuck well.
well i have an 06 and i didnt want to remove the air bag and all. plus there were like 50 rivets so it was easier to drill out and have nothing left over.

Re: DIY Steering wheel emblem removal

Installed the midnight wolf steering wheel emblem...It looks great and doesn't look awkward or anything. You have to use superglue to put it on there. I tried double sided tape but it didn't work at all. I'll try to get some pics up soon after I get my interior finished

Re: DIY Steering wheel emblem removal

I wish i saw this when i was trying to get my H out of the wheel. I tried grinding down and totally screwed up my wheel cover, have cut marks and gouges all around where the H was. So now i have to get a whole new cover. What a pain.

Re: DIY Steering wheel emblem removal

This method isn't Dangerous. It just needs a Followup DIY.

If you do this on an 07-08 you are IN DANGER. When you remove the Emblem a Metal brakcet falls and is left INSIDE the airbag enclosure. This is BAD if the Airbag ever Deploys.
If you have an 03-06 model, follow THIS DIY on how to get that piece out.
If you have an 07-08 Model, Follow this DIY to remove the front piece. THEN follow THIS DIY to get the bracket Out. http://www.newtiburon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187881
