Intermittent High Idle

Hi everyone!

I have a weird high idle problem happening with my 07 2.7 tib. Most of the time the idle is fine and normal. Other times, and this happens at least one day a week, the idle will sit around 2000rpms. Sometimes it will climb to almost 3000. This is while sitting in neutral. If I disengage the clutch there is a slight difference but it still remains high. Once I put it in first and go it drops down to normal. But once I'm at a stop and throw it in neutral the idle goes right back up. Now it will do this for a day or two. I'll go to start one morning and the idle is back to normal, until it acts up again.

I changed the TPS sensor awhile back and cleaned out the throttle body. It was idling high today so I decided to shut the car off and unplug the IAC valve connector. Started the car back up and had it in neutral. The RPMS sat at about 1100 and the needle kind of bounced around. I let it run for a couple minutes before reconnecting the IAC valve. After starting the car again with it reconnected the idle was right back at 2000+.

I didn't notice any vacuum leaks, well didn't hear any. I have a new IAC valve on the way.

Anything else someone can suggest? Thanks in advance :)

Quick update. On the way to the office today the idle was fine compared to last night when it was high.

I have the test results that I checked on my lunch today. So the car sat for about 5 hours.

IAT temp: 97F
ECT temp: 100F
Throttle percentage was at 10.2%. When at full throttle it read 93.3%. It didn't seem to jump but I also don't think I was smooth about it haha.

I did not check the LTFT yet. I don't remember seeing that in the live data. I'll check again later. I'm going to check the intake for cracks, it is stock.

So I just got home and I was sitting in neutral and the rpms were bouncing around. I got some live data while this was happening.

With the car running, the TP jumped from 14% up to 60% and back down. It did this a couple times.

With the engine off the LongFT1 is 1.6% and LongFT2 is 0.8%. Both ShrtFT1 and 2 are 0%. The pictures below are before the rpms started jumping. The car was off.
I'd say there's something up with the TPS, it shouldn't jump around like that. the MAF did seem a bit low, but fuel trims were spot on so I wouldn't worry about it for now.

was the replacement TPS an oem or aftermarket sensor. as stated many times in the past, these car's don't take kindly to aftermarket sensors.

also, is it just me or is that thing misfiring like crazy
So, my test you did the TPS was fine, but then it's jumping around? It should not do that, it will mess you and the EVU up.

Data looks OK, rarely do you get full range out of the TPS.
New parts may read a little better.

Keep us posted.

How many miles? any pending fault codes?

Your MAF value seems low. check if MAF volt in your live data changes with RPM change.
Clean MAF sensor (use CRC cleaner) and clean connector contacts then put some dielectric grease on the connectors. If that doesn't help then disconnect the MAF connector and see if it idles better.
Take IAC valve out, clean it, inspect for any cracks and inspect the gasket condition.

Also check Crankshaft Position Sensor wires.

The TPS was purchased from Advance Auto Parts. I was in a bind and needed the part fast. I actually went to Auto Zone first and they gave me the completely wrong sensor, this is before I had taken it off and seen what it looked like. Here is the sensor I got:

https://shop.advanceautoparts.com/p...tle-position-sensor-ec3304/20971734-P?navigationPath=L1*14932|L2*14985|L3*15362

Misfiring? I've only experienced a misfire in a vehicle once. The entire car bogged down until it stalled out. Could you elaborate?

Things like a TPS tend to either be good, or bad.
Poor contacts or wiring issues can be intermittent.

Well guys I just installed the new TPS. It's funny how the TPS arrived before the IAC valve when I ordered the valve first. It would have been nice to do both at the same time since you have to take the IAC valve off to get at the TPS. Oh well, it should be here tomorrow. Also replacing some struts tomorrow too :).

The high idle has been off and on. It was really bad on Monday. The idle was high all day, every time I started the car. Tuesday and today were totally normal. After installing the new TPS I noticed the idle was below 1000rpms, maybe 800? We shall see how the rest of the week goes. I'll be sure to keep you posted.

If you have any other suggestions, I'm all ears :).

By any chance did you find a solution? I’ve had this exact issue for a month now

....Hope you bought new stabilizer bar links, in case you have to cut them.
at this point I don't even attempt to remove the nuts, I plan on cutting them from the start :p

I've never been able to get one to come off, they always spin or snap on me. given that these are Wisconsin winter beaters I'm talking about. hopefully OP lives in an area that's nicer to cars
